Capacity Building

Green Approaches was contracted by the CI-GEF Project Agency to develop a project document for a regional capacity building project. The aim was to strengthen the capacity of COMESA member States to comply with Transparency Requirements of the Paris Agreement through establishment of  an Eastern and Southern Africa Regional CBIT transparency framework. The team worked collaboratively with the client undertaking work ranging from policy and literature reviews, stakeholder and community engagement and regional sub-consultant management. The Pro-Doc was delivered within time and budget constraints.

The Liberia follow up Capacity building project to enhance Transparency Reporting

 

Green Approaches played a Team leader role in preparing the GEF (Global Environment Facility) project document for Liberia leveraging our expertise in capacity building approaches and development of environmental management initiatives. Building on phase one achievements, the project focused on enhancing the capacity of Liberia stakeholders to effectively meet the transparency reporting obligations outlined in the Paris Agreement. The comprehensive document outlined strategies and actions to enhance the understanding and implementation of transparency measures, contributing to Liberia’s commitment to climate action.

During the project preparation, Green Approaches provided valuable insight into policy analysis and capacity development approaches in environmental management. The phase II initiative aimed at creating a robust framework for transparency reporting, empowering Liberia stakeholders with the knowledge and tools necessary to enhance capacity to fulfill their obligations under the Paris Agreement. This project exemplifies our commitment to fostering global sustainability and supporting countries in their efforts to address climate change challenges.

CI-GEF Project Development: Earth Ranger Monitoring Systems

Biodiversity Conservation, Technology and Innovation

Deployment of Earth Ranger Technology for more effective Protected Area Management. Green Approaches was engaged and prepared a GEF Project Document/CEO Endorsement Package for a Full-sized Project (FSP) titled: “The deployment of EarthRanger, a data visualization and analysis software to strengthen Protected Area Management Effectiveness in Africa’s National Parks.” as part of the GEF Project Preparation Grant (PPG).

The Global Environment Facility (GEF), Conservation International and Vulcan proposed to improve operations of priority protected areas in several countries across Africa to meet current and future threats. GAL Prepared a three-country project.

 

Preparation of General Management Plan (GMP) for Mgahinga Gorilla National Park in the Virunga Landscape

 

Dr. Robert Nabanyumya of Green Approaches was team leader for the process of preparing the Mgahinga Gorilla National Park GMP – a ten-year strategic plan that provides guidance for the management of this gorilla park. The 2026 to 2035 GMP builds on achievements and lessons learned from the previous GMP (2014–2024), which tackled law enforcement, improved tourism infrastructure, expanded community engagement, reduced incidences of HWC with strengthening the stone/buffalo wall, and supported transboundary conservation; it integrates cross-cutting themes such as, research and monitoring, to support science-based management through targeted research and monitoring of ecological and socio-economic indicators, climate adaptation, transboundary cooperation, and aligns with national and international frameworks.

The document was developed through an inclusive and consultative process involving stakeholders at the national, district, and community levels, as well as regional conservation partners. Green Approaches provided valuable expertise towards incorporating sustainable management practices and biodiversity conservation approaches. The management purpose for the GMP is to protect and sustainably manage Mgahinga Gorilla National Park for tourism, community livelihoods, and ecosystem services for the current and future generations.

The Uganda Shea Landscape project to build sustainable and climate resilient livelihoods in Northern Uganda

Green Approaches led the process of preparing the GEF (Global Environment Facility) project document for Uganda’s Shea landscape project. The project focus is on building sustainable and climate-resilient livelihoods in the Shea Landscape of Northern Uganda. The comprehensive document outlined strategies and actions to enhance the shea value chain to support community survival in light of climate change challenges.

During the project development process, Green Approaches provided valuable expertise towards incorporating sustainable land management practices and shea nut commercialisation. The joint efforts aimed at creating a robust framework for climate change adaptation as well as aspects of mitigation, empowering stakeholders with the knowledge and tools necessary to enhance community resilience to climate change effects. This project exemplifies our commitment to fostering global sustainability and supporting countries in their efforts to address climate change challenges.

 

The Sierra Leone Gola Landscape project

 

Green Approaches was contracted by Conservation International and led the process of preparing the GEF (Global Environment Facility) CEO Endorsement Package for the Guinean forest’s biome child project – Sierra Leone’s Gola forests landscape project. The project focus is on Strengthening Conservation and effective governance of Sierra Leone’s Critical Forests in the Gola Forest Landscape. The comprehensive document outlined strategies and actions to enhance the natural resources management of the transboundary ecosystem.

During the project development process, Green Approaches provided valuable expertise towards incorporating sustainable forest management practices and transboundary natural resources management approaches. The design focused on the conservation and restoration of Kambui Hills Forest Reserve (FR) and the associated community forest lands in the Greater Gola Forest Landscape in order to address climate change impacts. The target project area in Sierra Leone encompasses the Gola Rainforest National Park (GRNP), Kambui Hills Forest Reserve (North and South) and Tiwai Island Wildlife Sanctuary; an area that is part of the Gola-Foya-Kpo Mountains that straddle the Sierra Leone-Liberia border along the Mano River, forming one of the largest remaining blocks of the Upper Guinea Forest.

 

Collaboration between Green Approaches and  ACELI-AFRICA

Green Approaches  is collaborating with ACELI-AFRICA to build the capacity of agri- based SMEs in Uganda towards improved productivity and sustainable agro-production.  Aceli is a market-based incentive facility that catalyzes finance for agribusiness SMEs through a reward of “impact bonuses” to lenders for loans that have a significant positive impact.

Green Approaches  provides verification and diagnostic services as well as Technical Assistance – capacity building in sustainable land management; focusing on(i) regenerative practices, which contribute to rebuilding soil health, restoring degraded land, and applying holistic land and ecosystem management practices resulting in both carbon sequestration and improving the water cycle; and (ii) circular agri-based systems, that optimize the use of biomass and renewable resources on-farm, in value-added processing, and along value chains.

 

Agricultural Insurance Systems Review

Evaluation and Monitoring

We were approached by the Ministry of Environment and Water, Uganda to undertake a review of Opportunities, Challenges and Development of the Viability of Agricultural Insurance Systems in Uganda for Enhancement of Climate Resilience. The team prepared a detailed analysis of Uganda’s farming systems in the various agro-ecological zones. Works included comprehensive literature reviews, onsite stakeholder engagement and development of projects specific data collection methodologies. The client was provided with comprehensive documentation of opportunities for agriculture insurance in the country, synthesis of challenges and risks in agricultural insurance and a set of proposal for effective implementation of agriculture insurance in Uganda.

 

The Gambia – Capacity Building Initiative for Transparency

Green Approaches Limited (GAL) was contracted by Conservation International (CI) to prepare a GEF Project Document/CEO Endorsement Package for a medium-sized Project (MSP) for implementation in the Gambia. The project was aimed at strengthening the capacity of the Government of Gambia to comply with Transparency Requirements of the Paris Agreement. GAL worked collaboratively with the client in undertaking work ranging from policy and literature reviews, stakeholder engagement at both national and regional levels. The Pro-Doc was delivered within the scheduled time and available budget.

 

Preparation of General Management Plan (GMP) for Bwindi Impenetrable National Park in the Greater Virunga Landscape

Dr. Robert Nabanyumya of Green Approaches led the process of preparing Bwindi’s GMP – a ten-year strategic plan that provides guidance for the management of this forest biodiversity rich park. The 2026 to 2035 GMP is a science-driven and community-centered roadmap for safeguarding Bwindi’s ecological integrity while enhancing its role in conservation tourism, climate resilience, and inclusive development. It is built on a foundation of collaboration, innovation and sustainability. The plan outlines strategic interventions to address emerging pressures, strengthen institutional capacity and foster a future where both biodiversity and people co-exist in harmony.

The document was prepared in a consultative process generating stakeholder ownership and Green Approaches provided valuable expertise towards incorporating sustainable management practices and biodiversity conservation approaches. The GMP delivers structured direction across five focus programmatic areas: Ecosystem Management; Wildlife Resource Protection; Community Conservation; Tourism and Business Management; and Governance and Capacity Development.

 

Land Degradation Neutrality PIF for Liberia

Dr. Robert Nabanyumya of Green Approaches was contracted by the Food and Agriculture Organisation of the UN (FAO) to develop a Full sized GEF Land Degradation Neutrality PIF for The Government of Liberia – promoting sustainable landscape management and climate-resilient production in rice landscapes of Liberia through nature-based solutions that support the achievement of Liberia’s voluntary LDN targets.

The document was developed in a consultative process generating stakeholder ownership and Green Approaches provided expertise input on sustainable land management practices. The project – including the baseline investments – was prepared to center its efforts on the sustainable management and productivity intensification of rice landscapes. Employing a comprehensive landscape approach, it was designed to closely collaborate with parallel investments, such as the CFB-IP, to address Liberia’s impacts on forest ecosystems comprehensively.

The FSC Zamba Heritage Initiative

 

Green Approaches was contracted by FSC Global Development GmbH to provide consultancy services to FSC Africa for development of concepts of four thematic areas for the Zamba Heritage, an African-led initiative for sustainable use and conservation of African forests, supported by a consortium of countries and organizations.

During the process, Green Approaches provided valuable expertise towards incorporating sustainable forest management innovations to significantly scale sustainable forest management across the Africa continent and mark a shift from commitment to action for Africa’s forest legacy. Four concept papers were developed for the Zamba Heritage initiative through which FSC Africa seeks to bring 30 million hectares of African forests under sustainable management, restore 5 million hectares of degraded forest landscapes, support forest-based green enterprises, and mobilize long-term investment to secure the future of Africa’s forests.

 

The Uganda CARE – FCDO Climate Smart Jobs Programme

Green Approaches was contracted by CARE International and led the process of preparing a project proposal under the British Council FCDO Climate Smart Jobs Programme- Component 4: Climate Smart Land Management Services.

During the project development process, Green Approaches in close collaboration with CARE UK and CARE Uganda provided valuable expertise towards incorporating sustainable land management practices and community livelihoods implementation approaches.

The Uganda follow up Capacity building project to enhance Transparency Reporting

The comprehensive document outlined strategies and actions to enhance the understanding and implementation of transparency measures, contributing to Liberia’s commitment to climate action.

The project focused on building the capacity of Nigerian stakeholders to effectively meet the transparency reporting obligations outlined in the Paris Agreement. The comprehensive document outlined strategies and actions to enhance the understanding and implementation of transparency measures, contributing to Nigeria’s commitment to climate action.

Establishment of an Arboretum

We have taken significant strides in fostering environmental sustainability through the establishment of a cutting-edge arboretum in Kamuli District (Uganda). Our dedicated team has meticulously curated a diverse collection of tree species, both native and exotic, to create a living showcase of biodiversity. This arboretum serves as a multifaceted platform for research, education, and conservation. We conduct ongoing studies to understand the growth patterns and ecological significance of various trees, contributing valuable insights to sustainable forestry practices. Through educational programs, guided tours, and community engagement initiatives, we strive to raise awareness about the pivotal role of trees in our ecosystem. Our commitment to building and maintaining this arboretum reflects our overarching mission to promote responsible forestry, environmental conservation, and a deeper connection between people and nature.
